COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Liberty Senior Living began its annual Liberty Games on March 18th and will end them on March 20th, where seniors compete in sports plus brain games like a mile walk, bocce ball, and water balloon toss. About 100 seniors ages 65 and older from across the Lowcountry are taking part at South Bay in Mount Pleasant.  WCIV
  • Wando Library partnered with local groups to improve its reading gardens and become a certified Monarch Way Station, and it will launch its Growing Green Series with a Reading Garden volunteer event on March 29 at 9:00 a.m. — additional workshops on recycling, composting, creek care, film series, and backyard bird habitat are scheduled through May.  Moultrie News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash on I-26 eastbound closed two lanes Tuesday morning and slowed the morning commute until highway patrol set up traffic markers—by 7:30 a.m. all lanes reopened.  WCIV

CRIME NEWS

  • Officials will provide an update on the officer involved shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon in Mount Pleasant as SLED continues its investigation.  WCIV
  • On March 15, Mount Pleasant police arrested a 36-year-old man whose black GMC sped over 100 mph on the Arthur Ravenel Bridge (6:35 p.m.)—he had previous DUI charges—and later arrested a 26-year-old man in a tagless Nissan Altima on North Hwy 17 who drank three mixed drinks and showed signs of intoxication.  Moultrie News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Charleston County School District is accepting site applications to provide free breakfast and lunch for children through its Seamless Summer Feeding Program—an eight-week initiative running from June 2 to July 25 with applications due by April 11. Meals will be picked up daily at approved sites throughout the county.  Charleston County School District

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Charleston County held its first quarterly public meeting for segment A of the Main Road Corridor Project on Thursday to give residents updates and answer questions—community members, including Executive Director Katie Zimmerman from Charleston Moves, remain worried that adding only a sidewalk from talks with SCDOT does not fully address issues with commutes, drainage, and potential traffic bottlenecks. Officials said more details on bike and pedestrian access would be shared at future meetings.  WCIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sara Couch, a Mount Pleasant native, is running on April 21 as a member of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team in the 129th Boston Marathon to raise funds for cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  Moultrie News
