COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Joye Law Firm is offering free $25 Uber vouchers to help reduce impaired driving this St. Patrick's Day weekend. Residents must register by 11:59 p.m. March 12 and get vouchers by 10 a.m. March 13 for safe rides (available Mar. 13, noon to Mar. 15, 4 a.m.).  WCIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jackson Vann is a 13-year-old performer returning to his hometown this week to star as Little Marlon in 'MJ the Musical' at North Charleston—running Tuesday through Sunday. His return brings the national Broadway tour home for a special performance.  WCIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On March 9, the CCSD Board approved Option 5 (new attendance lines for Peninsula elementary schools) to balance enrollment and maintain neighborhood connections, with changes set for the 2027 to 2028 school year while current students keep attending their schools.  Charleston County School District
  • At Pinehurst Elementary School, four family members teach together and carry on a cherished legacy (spanning decades of commitment to learning). The Peterson and Petterson team of Judith, Keri, Maddison and Stacie work daily to support student success.  Charleston County School District
  • Hall Management Group donated $40,000 to Trident Technical College’s Bill Hall Entrepreneurship Endowed Scholarship Fund after raising funds at its sixth annual Braggin' Rights Bash—a competition featuring chefs and bartenders from 10 restaurants. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Tim Scott led a push for South Carolina to join the 2027 Military World Games, citing the state’s military history and boost. The games run from June 25 through July 4 and would be the first time the U.S. hosts the event — a historic chance for service members.  WCIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Technology is helping first responders and families locate people with dementia before dangerous wandering turns critical; in Charleston County, responders used GPS apps and drones during a search (an 82 year old man) and urge caregivers to set up safety plans.  WCIV

SPORTS NEWS

  • On March 7, Military Magnet Academy girls’ basketball team won the state title in Columbia with a 70-21 victory over Great Falls; eighth-grader Mariah Brown scored 25 points and the team secured its fifth championship in six years.  Charleston County School District
  • The Credit One Charleston Open will be held from March 28 to April 5 and will feature top tennis talent including 10 top-25 players, four former champions and emerging stars. Wild card and qualifying spots will be finalized soon at Credit One Stadium.  WCIV
  • Major League Football owner Adam McLean is launching Charleston’s first professional football team, the Brigade, with head coach Samuel Thomas and tryouts scheduled for June; the team will split home games between The Citadel and Charleston Southern University as it gears up for a fall kickoff.  Moultrie News
