COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Mount Pleasant family has built a new Rainbow Bridge to honor their dog Waffles and provide a place for visitors to remember pets (using donated wood and paint from local businesses). The ribbon cutting is scheduled for Sunday, March 8 at 1 p.m. at the Park West Recreation Fields.  WCIV
  • Post and Courier won 91 awards from the South Carolina Press Association on March 6 in Columbia, plus it earned the President’s Cup for Excellence as its 18th win in 19 years. The paper also received 33 first-place honors for top journalism.  The Post and Courier

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Mount Pleasant fire crews responded Friday to a report of flames on the 600 block of Bridlewood Lane — black smoke was seen but the blaze only affected a fence and yard equipment.  WCIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Feb. 27–28, students from Academic Magnet High School’s DECA program competed at the South Carolina State Career Development Conference and achieved their best showing ever, with over half ranking in the top ten and 20 set to compete at the International Career Development Conference in Atlanta on April 25–28.  Charleston County School District
  • At Harborview Elementary on March 4, students enjoyed a “Breakfast for Lunch” with locally milled grits (from Marsh Hen Mills); on March 5, owner Greg Johnsman visited Murray LaSaine Elementary to share his passion for traditional milling techniques as the district expands its use of Certified SC products.  Charleston County School District

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The S.C. Drought Response Committee has upgraded 11 counties to moderate drought status after record-low winter rainfall left water levels low + foresters warn that wildfire risks may increase as dry conditions persist.  WCIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tri-County SPEAKS Sexual Assault Services partnered with RAINN to expand its 24/7 crisis hotline by adding text and online chat in Spanish and English on March 5. The enhanced service offered stronger overnight and weekend support with trained bilingual advocates.  Moultrie News
