COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Senior Helpers is collecting over 1,000 Valentine’s Day cards from now until Feb. 9 to help ease loneliness among seniors across Summerville, Murrells Inlet, and nearby areas (local drop-offs and pick-ups are available). The drive aims to build community support for older adults.  WCIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • T.D. McMurry will host his store’s free live music event on Feb. 25 featuring local band Tounds at his shop in Mount Pleasant — guests may bring a chair, browse, and BYOB as doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.  Moultrie News
  • The Center for Birds of Prey will host live raptor demonstrations at Marion Square (downtown) during Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston, giving families a chance to see hawks, owls, and falcons while learning about conservation. Stephen Schabel said the shows aim to educate and entertain.  WCIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eight student-athletes were honored at Wando High School’s Signing Day ceremony on Feb. 4 at 9 a.m. in the Performing Arts Center — formally committing to college athletics and academics — as family, coaches and administrators celebrated years of dedication.  Moultrie News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local lawmakers introduced new bills to restrict THC products, and local dispensary owners fear the new rules may force some to close. They urge locals to contact representatives if they want to keep these products available (dispensary concerns remain high).  WCIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Smart Heart Act — designed to require AEDs in all schools and cardiac emergency plans — is advancing to the Senate Education Committee after a swift response at Lucy Beckham High saved custodian Linda S. Miles from a fatal heart attack. Advocates ask citizens to call representatives to support lifesaving changes.  WCIV
  • On Feb. 5, a mermaid from Wands and Wishes visited MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital (downtown), delighting young patients with a magical performance amid their long stays. The performer will soon return for weekend shows at the aquarium’s deep-water tank.  The Post and Courier

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday, local high school athletes signed letters of intent during National Signing Day with commitments including Dor Reichley (from St. Johns Christian School) choosing the Citadel and a Lucy Beckham student joining Mercer, while a Berkeley High player recovering from injury committed to Davidson Davie Community College.  WCIV
  • WCIV MyTV Charleston — in partnership with ABC News 4 — will air the SCHSL basketball championship games live from March 5 through March 7 at Colonial Life Arena at USC. The broadcast covers boys' and girls' matchups.  WCIV
  • Defenseman D.J. King is returning to the Stingrays after a brief stint with the Iowa Wild & will play in today's game against the Savannah Ghost Pirates at 7 p.m. in Savannah.  WCIV
