ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A massive fire burned on Laurel Island overnight Wednesday near I-26 and the Ravenel Bridge, and crews had extinguished the flames by 2 a.m. Thursday while the cause remains unknown.  WCIV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Butterfly Consignment Boutique, known for women's clothing, closed its doors yesterday and will donate its high-end items to charities including My Sister's House — God's Gifts Thrift Store in Mount Pleasant. EDUCATION NEWS

  • CCSD Superintendent Anita Huggins unveiled the Peninsula Promise on Jan. 29—a community-driven vision to boost learning opportunities across the peninsula. The plan will add Universal Pre-K, new resource centers, and repurposed campuses starting in August.  Charleston County School District
  • Students from East Cooper Center for Advanced Studies in Mount Pleasant were named national finalists in the NASA TechRise Challenge following NASA’s Jan. 20 announcement. They will build a self-healing device to fly on a Virgin Galactic rocket this summer (earning $1,500 and support) to test their design.  Charleston County School District

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Town officials discussed phase 1 construction of the Mount Pleasant Public Service Training Facility during the Jan. 27 council retreat. Planned for Feb on 30+ acres at 5400 Seewee Road in Awendaw, the $5.7 million project will let first responders + police and federal agencies train in a purpose-built facility.  Moultrie News

HEALTH NEWS

  • In Mount Pleasant, fire departments warn that unsafe heating practices such as using ovens or misplaced space heaters can increase emergency calls as freezing temperatures persist today and more extreme cold is expected (residents should check heater manuals and functioning smoke detectors for safety).  WCIV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The South Carolina Stingrays signed forward Ryan Hunter, the FPHL Rookie of the Year who played in three games earlier, and he will join tonight's game at North Charleston Coliseum against the Jacksonville Icemen at 7:05 p.m.  WCIV
  • On Thursday, the Stingrays recalled goaltender Mitch Gibson (26) to the Hershey Bears after he recorded 26 saves in an overtime win over the Florida Everblades. He now returns to AHL play with a strong season record.  WCIV
