About this event
The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art presents a film screening of Daughters of the Dust (1991), directed by Julie Dash.
About the film: At the dawn of the 20th century, a multi-generational family in the Gullah community on the Sea Islands off of South Carolina struggle to maintain their cultural heritage and folklore while contemplating a migration to the mainland.
SaltWata Cinema Club is an itinerant film club designed to engage the community in film and conversation, with an emphasis on Black, diasporic, indie and short films. It was created in 2019 by Charleston’s current poet laureate, A$iahMae. For more information, visit asiahmae.com .
