About this event

The Daniel Island Community Speaker’s Series will continue on Wednesday evening, November 11, from 7:00-8:00 PM in the ballroom at the Daniel Island Club. The speaker will be Tony Romeo, the CEO of Eco Minerals and the leader of a group that not long ago was searching for Amelia Earhart’s plane in the Pacific Ocean.

Tony comes from an aviation family. His father flew for Pan Am, his brother is an Air Force pilot. Given that background, perhaps not surprisingly, he has been fascinated by Amelia Earhart since he was a kid. Her plane disappeared in the Pacific Ocean in July 1937 as she was attempting to be the first woman to fly around the world. Absurd conspiracy theories have arisen to explain her disappearance — she was abducted by aliens, was living in New Jersey under an alias, was executed by the Japanese, or died as a castaway on an island. Tony wanted to lay the theories to rest and discover the truth.

Tony attended the Air Force Academy. After graduation, he spent time in the Air Force as an intelligence officer. He then moved to Charleston and got into commercial real estate. But he wanted to do something a bit more adventurous, so he founded a deep-sea exploration company called Deep Sea Vision and soon thereafter began his 100-day search for Amelia Earhart’s plane. Three years ago, he thought that his team had found the long-missing plane. In the end, it was a natural geologic rock formation that closely resembled the shape of an airplane. Tony was clearly disappointed, but he is an explorer. He has continued to look for other missing planes. Four months ago he discovered a Pan Am Clipper plane missing since 1952 in 2,000 feet of water off the coast of Puerto Rico. Tony has a personal connection with this particular flight which we do not yet know but Tony has promised to reveal at this event.

Come join us November 11. There will be a cash bar and passed hors d’oeuvres between 6:30-7:00 PM. The program will begin promptly at 7:00 PM and will conclude around 8:00 PM.
